Artist’s Statement

Emma Marie views her paintings as captured moments of space and time where thoughts and emotions emerge into physical form … and what Eckhart Tolle would describe as N.O.W.N.E.S.S.

Works are created from a meditative state of play, in a call and response manner, each colour and mark builds on what is there and always seeks to achieve balance and harmony. Her painting process can be likened to the designing of ones life; building up the layers, scratching back, reworking, risking, and realisation.

It is through the NOW that each painting has come into being, they embody each moment of their formation … they drip with intention to make known the unknown!

Biography

Emma Marie lives in Nelson, New Zealand with her husband and 4 sons.
In 2005, Emma successfully completed her Bachelor of Visual Arts Degree with Excellence from NMIT. Other areas of study include, Psychology, Fashion and Textile Design, and Graphic Design.

At 17, Emma travelled, and studied Psychology in Brazil, this sparked a lasting and keen interest in the human psyche, specifically, Carl Jung’s thought on balance to achieve wholeness.

‘If you bring forth what is within you, what you bring forth will save you. If you do not bring forth what is within you, what you do not bring forth will destroy you.’
The Gnostic Christ (Dead Sea Scrolls).

Jung’s challenging and empowering ideas are explored throughout Emma’s works by means of opposites, such as, intense lights and deep darks, explorative abstract and intentional realism.

The differences reference the vast array of experiences, thoughts, and emotions that we carry within us, never wholly one or the other, we are a fluctuating mix of all that is.

Emma believes art has the power to transcend the intellectual ‘known’ to communicate directly at a soul level, bringing the ability for self realization and transformation. Emma wants to invite the viewer to dive deep and question … what lies beyond the veil!
