ATELIER Artist Residencies 2020
The ATELIER Artist Residencies are hosted by ATELIER Studio|Gallery in Nelson, New Zealand, and open to artists of faith exploring ideas through the visual arts (painting, drawing, mixed-media, sculpture, textiles), creative writing, digital media, and video.
We believe that residencies are one of the most effective ways to enable artists to develop a body of work or new project, or make significant progress toward the resolution of a project already underway. Residencies offer to the artist an uninterrupted period of time and space to focus, free from the usual responsibilities of everyday life. Residencies provide artists with the means to fully engage with their practice to create new work, reach new audiences, and develop new levels of arts engagement.
The ATELIER Artist Residencies are special because we create an environment that connects art and creativity with the journey of Christian faith. Every artist, made in the image of God, is a creator that brings intangible things into existence through the creative work they do. The journey of faith, like the journey of art, are so intrinsically connected, that we have thoughtfully created a space for artists to engage, explore, and develop in both through their time in the Studio and the peaceful environs of Nelson.
The ATELIER Artist Residencies include the use of the large Studio at ATELIER Studio|Gallery, and accommodation at the Art House on Shelbourne:
THE STUDIO:
Housed in the same building as the gallery, the studio is a large 80m/squared space with high ceilings and steel trusses. Natural light floods in from the West windows. The Studio is expansive, warm, well maintained, and fitted out for visual arts, writing, and digital practices. The Studio shares common areas with the gallery: kitchen and lounge space, storeroom, clean up sinks, toilets and bathrooms. The Studio can be accessed 24/7 and is alarm monitored with keypad access. ATELIER Studio|Gallery is situated on the city fringe and is literally a one minute walk to cafes, restaurants, museum, galleries, and more.
THE ACCOMMODATION:
The Art House on Shelbourne is a 2 bedroom private residence available for artist accommodation. Located within a 5-minute walk from the Studio, the Art House is situated in an historic, quiet, and sunny location. The Art House has been recently renovated and offers a wonderful environment for artists to base themselves. Residencies are self-catered (residents provide their own food).
Additional surcharge if resident comes with a spouse.
The duration of our residencies are for one month at least, and up to a maximum of three months per artist. We offer both solo and shared, self-funded residencies. We also offer fully funded residencies as and when funding is available. Successful applicants will be decided upon, based on the strength of the artists’ application including their project proposal, examples of work, and artists’ bio and statement.
Our next series of artist residencies launch this July for the remainder of the year. We are currently applying for funding to help support artists into the residencies. Please apply by JUNE 30th 2020 to be considered in this next round of funding if successful.
Residency fee: $2500 per/month (shared, self-funded residency – 2 artists)
